Do You Need Motorcycle Insurance In Your State? Exceptions: Montana, Florida, Washington

Do you need motorcycle insurance in your state? In most states, the answer is yes. If you need help determining the amount that is required, check out the State Requirements section of this website. Although most states require that you have insurance or some alternative form of financial responsibility before you ride, there are a few exceptions to the rule. Some states simply haven’t updated their laws and/or feel that it should not be a state requirement to have your motorcycle insured.

States That Don’t Require Motorcycle Insurance

Below are the few states that do NOT mandate motorcycle insurance.  If you live in any other state, you will need to get coverage that satisfies the state’s minimum liability requirements.

  • Florida: In this state, motorcycle insurance is generally considered optional for most people. Individuals that have a clean driving record are not going to be held accountable for providing insurance. However, if you are ever “at fault” for an accident, you will be mandated to purchase insurance for up to three years in order to maintain your bikes registration. If you do not carry insurance of up to $10,000 in this state, you must also wear a helmet.
  • Montana: Motorcycles are not included in this state’s auto insurance statutes. This means that although automobiles are required to be insured, motorcycles and other two wheeled vehicles are exempt from these rules.
  • Washington: This state has no laws that involve insurance for any street-legal two-wheeled vehicle. This means if you have a motorcycle, moped, or motor-driven cycle, you are not legally obligated to purchase insurance for it.

If you live in a state that doesn’t require insurance…

Just because you live in a state that doesn’t require you to get motorcycle insurance, does NOT mean that you should ride without coverage. If you are involved in an accident, you are still going to be held financially responsible for the damages. If you ride your motorcycle and get into an accident without already having insurance, you will need to pay for the damages out of your own personal savings. If you have insurance, your insurance company will cover the damages.

Although you may live in a state that doesn’t require insurance, it is still smart to be protected in case you are ever involved in an accident. All it takes is a single accident and you could end up paying thousands of dollars out-of-pocket to cover damages. If you have insurance, your insurer will help process a claim and take care of the payments. To check out how much a policy would cost, use the free tool below to enter your Zip Code.
