Rider Insurance is a smaller, niche company providing excellent motorcycle insurance coverage for individuals with in the United States. Rider insurance has been providing motorcyclists with insurance since 1971 – the year that they were founded. Initially they only had insurance policies for individuals in the state of New Jersey, but have since expanded to 7 other states. Many people love Rider because they are a company providing strictly motorcycle and alternative vehicle insurance. The people working for Rider insurance company are specialists that really know the value of your motorcycle and how to help you save money on your policy.

The reason people choose Rider for motorcycle insurance is because they are a knowledgeable company that generally offers great deals. In addition to insuring typical motorcycles, they also provide coverage for: scooters, mopeds, ATV’s, and any alternative off-road vehicle. Their tagline is: “We do one thing, and we do it better: Motorcycle Insurance.” That quote pretty much sums up what this company is all about. Whether they are superior to other mainstream companies is for you to decide. I highly recommend considering Rider if you live in a state where they offer coverage.

Rider Motorcycle Insurance History

Rider insurance was founded in 1971 in the state of New Jersey by a man named Harry Bleiwise. Originally the main goal of Rider was to offer more affordable motorcycle insurance policies in comparison to other companies. Back when Rider was founded, many companies were not giving motorcyclists the coverage that they needed at a rate that they could afford. Rider was the alternative solution to steeply priced insurance policies for any motorcycle owner in New Jersey.

Since the 1970s when Rider insurance was founded, they have branded themselves as one of the best motorcycle insurance providers in the United States. The reason people love Rider is because they cater strictly to the motorcycle community. Other insurance companies may offer different types of insurance such as: auto, homeowners, life, etc. The fact that Rider insurance was specifically geared towards motorcycle enthusiasts is what separates them from the rest.

One cool thing about Rider insurance is that the company founder, Harry Bleiwise has always had an interest in motorcycles – this fueled his inspiration for starting Rider. Under his term as chairman, the company has blossomed into a leading insurer for motorcyclists in the United States. Additionally, part of his mission when founding Rider was to create a friendly atmosphere and camaraderie amongst motorcyclists. Rider is a company that has been involved in many charitable causes and sponsored many motorcycle-related venues and events.

Currently, Rider insurance is the largest provider of motorcycle insurance in the entire state of New Jersey. Since starting back in 1971, they now offer coverage in other states. Whenever there is growth and expansion, it is largely due to increased demand. People know that Rider offers great policies for motorcyclists and word spreads quickly. Additionally profits from satisfied customers have allowed Rider to continuously build upon their loyal customer base. The goal of Rider is to keep Harry Bleiwise’s original vision intact by offering motorcycle insurance at an affordable rate and serving the needs of individuals that are truly passionate motorcyclists.

In what states does Rider offer motorcycle insurance?

Unfortunately not all 50 states offer Rider motorcycle insurance. This is a company that is fairly small compared to the major insurance conglomerates. Rider is a company that provides insurance coverage in 8 of the 50 United States. Although they only cover a handful of states, this company is one of the best for motorcycle enthusiasts. Many serious bikers argue that Rider is the best and most trusted insurer for motorcycles.

Below are the eight states with Rider insurance:

  1. Delaware
  2. Indiana
  3. Maryland
  4. New Jersey
  5. Ohio
  6. Pennsylvania
  7. Virginia
  8. West Virginia

Rider Motorcycle Insurance Coverage Options

Rider offers a few different coverage packages depending on your budget, motorcycle, and the state that you are from. Before ever purchasing a policy, knowing what type of coverage you will be getting is extremely important as a driver. Although it is important to take price into consideration as well, knowing that you are getting adequate coverage should be the first step for you as a driver. Once you have determined whether Rider has enough coverage for your needs, then you can worry about comparing prices. Read below to find out what types of coverage you can get with Rider.

Quality Plus Package – This includes fire, theft, comprehensive, and collision insurance with the coverage limits of your choice. Rider insurance pays up to $40,000 for theft or damages rendered upon an insured motorcycle. In order to qualify for this coverage, your motorcycle must be listed in the N.A.D.A. Book.

All Rider insurance policies include the following:

Accessory Coverage – If you want all of your motorcycle accessories insured, you can get up to $8000 worth of coverage at no extra cost with the Quality-Plus package that Rider offers. If you have a custom bike, they will allow you to purchase additional coverage for accessories and customization. This is basically for parts, equipment, paint, etc. They do have a $40,000 limit on accessories, should you need to buy extra.

Bodily Injury Coverage – If you are “at fault” for an accident and anyone is injured, bodily injury insurance will pick up the bills to help that person with their injury. Even if the passenger in your vehicle is injured, your insurance will have you covered. This also is included in every Rider policy.

Helmet / Safety Apparel Coverage – If you have the Quality-Plus package that Rider offers, they will pay for damages to your motorcycle helmet as well as any damages to safety apparel resulting from a covered collision loss.

Pedestrian Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Coverage – Laws regarding PIP differ depending on the state. For example, in the state of New Jersey, PIP benefits may only be claimed when pedestrians are injured by a motorcycle. PIP will pay up to $250,000 for the pedestrian that is injured – including all of their medical expenses.

Property Damage Liability Coverage – If you are involved in an accident in which you inflict damage on someone’s property, you are responsible for paying. With Rider, all policies come standard with coverage for property damage. If you are liable, the charges will be picked up by your insurance.

Roadside Assistance – Most people love the fact that Roadside Assistance is included in all polices that Rider offers. It helps with towing if your motorcycle is non-functioning or disabled. The towing service tows up to 35 miles and will help with things like a flat tire. Additionally, having roadside assistance is great if you need a battery jump, have a flat tire, run out of gas, have a mechanical error, or other breakdown.

Trip Interruption Coverage – If you are involved in an accident while on a trip or vacation and it is interrupted, your Rider insurance policy can pick up the tab for meals and lodging on your trip. This will help give you some peace of mind if you are on a trip.

Underinsured / Uninsured Motorist Coverage – If you were to get into an accident with someone that didn’t have insurance, the “uninsured” coverage would help you pay for damages caused by the uninsured party. Additionally, the “underinsured” coverage is to help cover damages inflicted by individuals with inadequate insurance to foot the bill. With Rider, underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage is included in all of their policies.

Rider Motorcycle Insurance Payment Options

One thing that Rider does not have a lot of are payment options. If you are looking for a diverse set of payment plans, or even to customize your payment plan, Rider may not have what you need. They really only offer two options of paying for your coverage: you can pay for it all at once, or you can make 4 payments annually.

1-Pay (Pay in Full) – If your premium is less than $200 at the start of your policy, you must pay in full with Rider. One option that most people like is the ability to pay for their coverage at once. Sort of a “one and done” type deal. Just pay for the policy and you no longer have to worry about making a payment until the following year.

4-Pay Installment Plan (4 Payments) – If you don’t have the budget to pay for your policy in full or all at once, the 4-Pay plan may be what you need. This allows you to make smaller payments as opposed to one huge down payment. This option may give you more time to save and budget your money. In order to qualify for this plan, you must send in 25% within the first five days your plan becomes active and then you pay 3 more equal installments on the 60th, 105th, and 150th day since your initial payment. Also there are installment fees associated with each payment as opposed to the “full payment” plan.

Note: Rider has new payment plans and options coming (Spring 2013).

Rider Payment Methods

  • Cash (Office visit only)
  • Credit Card (Visa / MasterCard)
  • Money Order
  • Online
  • Personal Check
  • Phone

Note: In order to pay online you must register your account. This allows you to make installment payments from the comfort of your computer.

Does Rider offer paperless billing?

As of this time it is unclear whether Rider insurance offers paperless billing. They do not make note of any paperless option on their website. However, since you pay online, you may be able to set up a paperless option after logging into your account. They could have something in the works though – they are a small company and are looking to expand upon their strong foundation of options.

Rider Motorcycle Insurance Discounts

A.M. Best Rating: N/A (Unknown)

Currently there is no A.M. Best rating for Rider Insurance. This may raise a few red flags in the minds of individuals that are concerned about the financial strength of a company. In this case you may be wondering whether Rider has sufficient funds to pay their claims or whether they may try to snake their way out of paying for certain claims. If a company has a good financial strength rating by A.M. Best, it means that they manage their money well and are doing good business.

With Rider, you have to take a deeper look at the company. Since 1971, most customers are satisfied with the insurance that they are providing and they have a loyal base of customers. Additionally, they have expanded from the state of New Jersey to 7 other states. If they were not doing well as a company, the rapid expansion would be unlikely. However, it is still important to err on the side of caution and do your own research before buying a policy. There are few independent reviews of Rider Insurance online.
