KTM Recalls Super Duke R Steering Damper 16181T01E for Free Fix

KTM is recalling one of its own accessories: the KTM PowerPart steering damper, part number 16181T01E. The part is sold to fit the 1290 Super Duke R and 1390 Super Duke R families, and KTM says the screw connection on the damper needs an update.

The fix is small and free. An authorized KTM dealer will apply threadlocker to the damper's screw connection. KTM announced the recall on October 15, 2026 and marked the notice valid for all markets.

Key points:

  • Affected part: PowerPart steering damper 16181T01E only, not the motorcycles themselves.
  • Who should check: owners of a 1290 Super Duke R (2020–2023), 1290 Super Duke R EVO (2022–2023), 1390 Super Duke R or 1390 Super Duke R EVO (2024–2026) with this damper fitted.
  • The repair: threadlocker on the damper's screw connection, done free of charge by an authorized KTM dealer.
  • What's missing: The linked KTM notice gives no affected count or crash or injury reports.

A recall for an accessory, not the bike

PowerParts is KTM's name for its own accessory and performance-parts catalog. Because this is an accessory, the bikes listed below aren't automatically affected. KTM lists them because the damper is compatible with them.

That's the detail that trips people up. A Super Duke R from one of these model years only needs the update if a 16181T01E damper is actually on it, or sitting in a box waiting to go on.

KTM's notice asks owners to "verify whether they own the steering damper concerned by this recall" and then contact a dealer.

The four compatible Super Duke R models

Compatible models and years from KTM's October 15, 2026 recall notice. Compatibility does not mean every listed bike has the damper.

KTM lists the damper as compatible with:

  1. KTM 1290 Super Duke R, model years 2020–2023
  2. KTM 1290 Super Duke R EVO, model years 2022–2023
  3. KTM 1390 Super Duke R, model years 2024–2026
  4. KTM 1390 Super Duke R EVO, model years 2024–2026

What the dealer does to the damper

A steering damper is the small hydraulic cylinder that links the frame to the front end. Its job is to calm a sudden shake in the handlebars, the kind of headshake a powerful naked bike can get when the front wheel goes light over a bump on hard acceleration.

KTM says it has "further optimized" the screw connection of the damper and introduced an improved specification for the assembly. On parts already in owners' hands, dealers will apply threadlocker to that screw connection.

Threadlocker is a liquid adhesive that cures in a bolt's threads so vibration can't gradually back the fastener out. KTM's notice doesn't say what it saw in the field, and it describes the action as proactive, to "help prevent potential issues."

KTM also says the update is done exclusively by its authorized dealer network. It hasn't published a do-it-yourself procedure, so don't treat this as a home job, even if you fitted the damper yourself.

How to check your bike and book the fix

  1. Find out which damper you have. If you bought it separately, check your receipt or the box for 16181T01E. If the bike came with accessories or you bought it used, ask a KTM dealer to look at the part.
  2. Contact an authorized KTM dealer. KTM's dealer locator is on its website. Ask the service desk whether they have the recall instructions for 16181T01E yet.
  3. Book the rework. KTM says the update is free. Ask how long the appointment takes and whether the bike needs to stay overnight.
  4. Keep the paperwork. Ask for a repair order showing the recall work. It answers the question if you sell the bike later.

KTM's notice doesn't tell owners to stop riding. If you notice the damper or its mounting feels loose, or the steering behaves differently, have it inspected before riding again.

Used bikes and loose dampers

This one is easy to miss on the secondhand market. Super Duke owners often add parts, and a seller may not remember which damper they bolted on.

If you're buying a 2020–2026 Super Duke R, ask whether a PowerPart steering damper was fitted and whether the recall work has been done. The same goes for a new-in-box damper bought at a swap meet or online: it's covered by the same notice.

What KTM hasn't said yet

The notice leaves several questions open:

  • Count: no number of affected dampers.
  • U.S. filing: the notice doesn't cite a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaign number.
  • Reason: no description of a failure, crash or injury.
  • Dates: no deadline or production date range for affected parts.

KTM's notice doesn't address insurance coverage. Ask your insurer how your policy treats the accessory, and keep the repair record alongside your other accessory receipts.
