Yamaha has reworked its trail and enduro 450 for 2027. The 2027 WR450F gets a hydraulic clutch, revised cam timing, a heavier magneto rotor, new engine brackets, retuned suspension, a lighter rear brake and a 51-tooth rear sprocket, all aimed at smoother, easier riding at the lower speeds where enduro riders spend most of their time.

Yamaha's U.S. site lists it at $10,499 MSRP plus a $675 destination charge.

The short version

  • Engine: YZ450F-based four-stroke with revised intake and exhaust cam timing and a higher-inertia magneto rotor for smoother power.
  • Clutch: new hydraulic clutch and reduced-load clutch springs. Yamaha claims 15% less lever pull.
  • Chassis: YZ450F aluminum frame with revised enduro engine brackets, a fully adjustable KYB fork and new rear suspension tuning.
  • Gearing and brakes: 51-tooth rear sprocket (up from 50) and a lighter rear brake with a revised caliper and piston.
  • Electronics: three-level traction control, mapping and an ECU lock through Yamaha's Power Tuner app.
  • Price: $10,499 MSRP plus $675 destination.

The engine changes: smoother at low speed

The WR450F's engine comes from the YZ450F motocrosser, retuned for trail and enduro use. For 2027, Yamaha lists:

  1. Revised cam timing on both intake and exhaust, which Yamaha says delivers smoother power
  2. A higher-inertia AC magneto rotor, adding rotating mass to reduce torque fluctuations
  3. Reduced-load clutch springs for a flatter clutch feel
  4. A low-fatigue throttle that takes less effort to hold open
  5. A new air filter assembly with an outer resonator to reduce intake noise

A heavier magneto acts a bit like a flywheel. It helps the engine chug through slow, technical sections without stalling, at the cost of some snap when revving. For an enduro bike, that's usually the right trade.

A hydraulic clutch

The biggest single change you'll feel is the hydraulic clutch. Yamaha says it cuts lever pull by 15%, which adds up over hours of feathering the clutch on rocky climbs. Hydraulic clutches also tend to keep a more consistent engagement point as they heat up than cable clutches do.

The 15% figure is Yamaha's claim; it hasn't published the test method.

Chassis, suspension and brakes

The frame is the YZ450F aluminum bilateral beam, but with revised enduro engine brackets whose shape and thickness Yamaha changed to tune flex for trail riding.

Suspension uses a fully adjustable, speed-sensitive KYB fork and a shock with what Yamaha calls stroke-optimized tuning for low-to-midrange response.

At the back, a lighter rear brake with a revised caliper and piston, and a 51-tooth sprocket in place of the 50-tooth part. Shorter gearing makes it easier to crawl in first gear, and Yamaha says it reduces the likelihood of stalls.

The bike rolls on an 18-inch rear wheel with Dunlop Geomax AT82 tires.

Power Tuner and the ECU lock

Yamaha's Power Tuner smartphone app lets you adjust engine mapping, choose among three traction-control levels, and set an ECU lock.

An ECU lock can add a layer of protection against tampering or theft, but it's not a guarantee: a WR450F can still be lifted into a truck. A good lock, secure storage and comprehensive coverage still matter.

Lights, but not necessarily street legal

The WR450F has a headlight, taillight and multi-function meter, and Yamaha's feature list labels them street-legal components. But Yamaha sells the WR450F in its off-road "Cross Country" lineup, and having lights doesn't make it registrable for the road in every state.

If you're hoping to plate one, check your state's rules for converting an off-road bike before you buy. Insurance follows that status: an off-road-only bike usually needs off-road or specialty coverage rather than a standard street policy.

Size and specs

Yamaha's U.S. page lists a 37.6-inch seat height, 256 pounds wet, a 57.9-inch wheelbase and a 2.0-gallon tank.

What we don't know

  • Independent testing of the 2027 changes
  • Dealer arrival timing in your area
  • The test basis for Yamaha's 15% lever-pull claim

Bottom line

The 2027 Yamaha WR450F adds a hydraulic clutch, revised cam timing, a heavier magneto, new engine brackets, a lighter rear brake and a 51-tooth sprocket to its YZ450F-based enduro platform, with app-based traction control and an ECU lock. Yamaha lists it at $10,499 plus $675 destination.
