Yamaha’s YE-01 Electric Motocross Concept Will Run in France

Yamaha’s electric motocross concept is about to leave the show stand and get dirty. In a September 28 announcement, the company said it will display the YE-01 Racing Concept and put it through an exhibition run at the Motocross of Nations in Ernée, France, starting October 2.

It’s a demonstration, not a race entry and not a sales launch. But it’s the first live demonstration Yamaha has announced for the bike, and the announcement includes one detail that separates it from most electric dirt bikes: a clutch lever.

What Yamaha is doing at Ernée

The Motocross of Nations is motocross’s national-team event, and this year’s edition runs from October 2. Yamaha says it will “display and conduct an exhibition run” of the YE-01 there.

The distinction matters. An exhibition run means the bike will be shown running for spectators. Yamaha’s announcement doesn’t say the YE-01 will race in the Motocross of Nations, and it doesn’t name a rider. If you read a headline that says Yamaha is “racing” an electric bike at MXoN, that’s not what Yamaha’s own release says.

The event is also new territory compared with 2025. At EICMA last November the YE-01 was displayed as a concept. This time it’s being demonstrated on a motocross track.

What the YE-01 is

Yamaha describes the YE-01 Racing Concept as a joint design with Electric Motion SAS, a French electric motorcycle manufacturer. The stated idea is “Expanding the Possibilities of Riders and Machines.” In practical terms, Yamaha says the concept combines two things:

1. Yamaha’s chassis knowledge. The frame is newly designed but based on technology and expertise from the YZ450F, Yamaha’s 450cc motocross bike. Yamaha says the aim is “high handling stability” and “a clear connection between the rider and machine.”
2. A dedicated electric power unit. Yamaha says the YE-01 uses a power unit developed jointly by Yamaha and Electric Motion specifically for this bike, combining both companies’ electric-vehicle know-how.

Yamaha says the goal is to keep the core appeal of motocross while offering “a new form of enjoyment” that uses what electric power does differently.

Why a clutch matters on an electric bike

The third feature Yamaha lists is the one riders will argue about: a mechanical clutch.

Most electric motorcycles skip the clutch entirely. Yamaha itself calls a clutch “a standout feature for an electric motocross bike.” The company says it allows the rider to “freely control drive force with the clutch lever.”

If you ride gas-powered dirt bikes, you already know why that’s interesting. On a gas motocross bike, the clutch is a control you use constantly:

• Starts and launches: feathering the lever to manage power off the line.
• Corner exits and ruts: briefly adjusting how much drive reaches the rear wheel.
• Slippery or technical sections: softening delivery without changing the throttle.

Yamaha doesn’t spell out how the YE-01’s clutch works in those situations, and it doesn’t say whether the bike has gears. What it does say is that the clutch is meant to create “a sense of unity with the machine” and to enhance the fun of controlling the bike. That’s a deliberate choice to keep a familiar rider input on an electric powertrain, and the exhibition run is a chance to see how it behaves in motion.

One caution on details. A few outlets have described the YE-01’s clutch as hydraulic. Yamaha’s own September announcement says “mechanical clutch” and doesn’t mention hydraulic actuation, so this story uses Yamaha’s wording.

Where this fits in Yamaha’s electric plans

Yamaha has been building electric racing experience elsewhere. Its November 2025 announcement noted that the company previously competed in the FIM Trial World Championship with its TY-E electric trials bike, and that it supplies the powertrain for the Lola Yamaha ABT team in Formula E.

Yamaha says it wants to use the electric-control technologies and thermal-management know-how from those programs with the YE-01, aiming at MXEP, a new electric motocross racing series. The September 2026 release now describes the series as “scheduled to launch in the near future,” and the initiative is “aimed at eventual participation.” Yamaha’s November 2025 release had said the goal was to enter MXEP in 2026.

So the timeline has softened in Yamaha’s own wording, from a 2026 target to eventual participation in a series with no announced start date. That’s worth knowing before assuming a race season is imminent.

Riders’ questions Yamaha hasn’t answered

A concept demonstration raises obvious questions, and Yamaha’s announcement doesn’t supply the answers.

• Will it be sold? Yamaha calls the YE-01 a “Racing Concept.” There’s no production plan, price or retail date in the announcement.
• Is it coming to the U.S.? Yamaha’s release doesn’t mention U.S. availability.
• How fast, how long and how heavy is it? No battery capacity, power figure, range, charge time or weight has been released.
• Which rider or riders will demonstrate it? The announcement doesn’t say.
• Is it entered in the Motocross of Nations? No. The announcement describes a display and exhibition run.

A related point for anyone thinking about the electric-dirt-bike market: a concept shown at a race weekend doesn’t have an insurance or registration profile the way a production motorcycle does. Any questions about coverage or legal status belong to the future, if Yamaha ever builds a version for sale.

What to watch from Ernée

Once the run happens, the real detail will come from what people who see it report. The useful things to look for:

• How the clutch is used. Whether riders and spectators describe it as an everyday control or a novelty.
• Whether Yamaha releases specs. A demonstration is a natural moment for power or battery numbers, but nothing says it will.
• Any word on MXEP timing. The series is the reason Yamaha gives for the project.
• Any comment on production. Yamaha’s language so far is about racing and concept development, not a for-sale model.

What it means for U.S. riders

For most American riders, the YE-01 is a look at where a major manufacturer is experimenting, not something on a dealer floor. The unusual part is the clutch lever, which suggests Yamaha thinks the feel of a manual bike is worth keeping even as the motor changes. Whether that idea reaches a bike you can buy is an open question, and Yamaha hasn’t said.
