Yamaha's 250cc motocrosser is new from the engine out for 2027. The 2027 YZ250F gets what Yamaha calls an all-new engine, a frame based on the YZ450F, a hydraulic clutch, new KYB settings and a lighter rear brake. Yamaha's U.S. site lists it at $9,099 in Team Yamaha Blue and $9,299 for the Monster Energy Edition, plus a $675 destination charge.
The short version
- Engine: all-new 250cc four-stroke with double-spring intake valves, a reshaped intake port, finger-follower intake valves and a 700 rpm higher rev limit, per Yamaha.
- Frame: adopts the YZ450F's compact aluminum bilateral beam design.
- Clutch: new hydraulic clutch adapted from the YZ450F.
- Suspension: revised KYB fork and shock, with tool-less low-speed compression adjustment on the shock.
- Brakes: all-new rear system with a smaller master cylinder and caliper, saving 180 grams, per Yamaha.
- Electronics: launch control, three-level traction control and an ECU lock via the Power Tuner app.
- Price: $9,099 or $9,299 (Monster Energy), plus $675 destination.

The engine
Yamaha's feature list describes the 2027 engine as all-new, with "increased power across the entire rpm range." Specific changes:
- Double-spring intake valves for stability at high rpm
- A reshaped intake port for more airflow
- Finger-follower rocker arms for the intake valves, which Yamaha says are inspired by the YZF-R1 and raise the rev limit by 700 rpm
- Dry-sump lubrication, which Yamaha credits with improved durability
Yamaha also says the engine is designed to meet FIM and AMA noise rules. Yamaha hasn't published horsepower or decibel figures on its feature page, so the power claim is the company's.
Frame, clutch and suspension
The YZ250F now uses the YZ450F's compact aluminum frame design. On a 250, that's meant to sharpen handling, though how it compares on the track is something only riding will tell.
The hydraulic clutch also comes from the 450. Hydraulic systems generally keep a more consistent feel as they heat up during a moto than cable clutches.
KYB suspension is revised at both ends with new damping, and the shock gets a tool-less low-speed compression adjuster, handy for quick changes between motos.
Brakes and bodywork
The rear brake is all-new, with a smaller, lighter master cylinder and caliper, and a bolt-on brake pedal for easier maintenance. Yamaha's U.S. page puts the weight saving at 180 grams.
New two-piece side covers make maintenance easier, and the seat borrows the YZ450F's honeycomb pattern.
Power Tuner
Through the Power Tuner app, owners can adjust fuel and ignition mapping, set launch control, choose among three traction-control levels and use an ECU lock. Yamaha describes the lock as an anti-theft function. It can deter a thief, but it won't stop someone from loading the bike into a truck.
Off-road only
The YZ250F is a closed-course motocross bike. Yamaha doesn't sell it as a street bike. To protect it, look at off-road or specialty coverage, and ask the insurer how it treats racing, since many policies exclude organized competition.
What we don't know
- Horsepower and torque figures
- Independent testing of the new engine and frame

Bottom line
The 2027 Yamaha YZ250F gets an all-new engine with a 700 rpm higher rev limit, the YZ450F's frame design, a hydraulic clutch, revised KYB suspension and a lighter rear brake. Yamaha lists it from $9,099 plus $675 destination.
