Yamaha has a new small sport bike, and it's starting in India. On September 4, 2026, Yamaha announced the YZF-R2, a 2027 model with a newly developed 204cc single, an electronic throttle, traction control and a quickshifter. It's built in India, slots above the YZF-R15 there, and was planned to reach Indian dealers from mid-September.
There's no U.S. announcement. But the R2 shows how much rider-aid technology Yamaha is now putting on bikes this small.
The short version
- Engine: new 204cc liquid-cooled, DOHC, four-valve, fuel-injected single with semi-dry-sump lubrication.
- Frame: newly designed steel-tube diamond frame.
- Electronics: YCC-T electronic throttle, Yamaha Ride Control modes, traction control and Yamaha's third-generation quickshifter.
- Versions: three, per Yamaha. Which features come on which version wasn't specified.
- Market: India, built by India Yamaha Motor. No U.S. plans announced.
- Price: not given in Yamaha's release.

A 204cc engine in a "200cc class"
Yamaha calls the R2 part of the 200cc class, but the engine is 204cc. It's a new design: liquid-cooled, double-overhead-cam, four valves and fuel injection.
The notable detail is semi-dry-sump lubrication. Yamaha says it reduces resistance losses inside the engine. Yamaha also claims class-leading power in India's 126–200cc segment, but it hasn't published a horsepower figure in the release, so there's nothing to check that against.
Big-bike electronics on a small bike
What stands out is the electronics list:
- YCC-T (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle): a ride-by-wire throttle, which Yamaha says is a first in its Indian segment
- Yamaha Ride Control: selectable ride modes and settings
- Traction control
- Third-generation quickshifter
Ride-by-wire is what makes the modes and traction control practical. On a beginner-friendly displacement, traction control can be a real help on wet or dusty roads.
Yamaha says the R2 comes in three versions but didn't say which features each one gets. Don't assume every version has every item on the list.
Where it sits
In India, Yamaha positions the R2 above the YZF-R15. It says the goal is the same "high performance feel and easy-to-ride character" as its bigger R1 and R9.
In the U.S., Yamaha's entry-level sport bike is the YZF-R3, and the company hasn't said anything about the R2 coming here. Nothing in the release suggests it's replacing the R3.
Why U.S. riders might care
Even if the R2 never reaches America, it's a signal. Features like ride-by-wire, traction control and quickshifters used to be reserved for bikes several times this size. When they appear on a 204cc bike built for a price-sensitive market, they tend to spread to other small models.
If you're a new rider shopping now, it's worth asking whether the small bikes you're considering have traction control or ABS. Those features matter more to how a bike treats a mistake than raw power does.
What we don't know
- Price in India
- Power and torque figures
- Version-by-version equipment
- Any U.S. or other export plans
Bottom line
Yamaha's YZF-R2 is a new 204cc sport bike for India, with YCC-T ride-by-wire, ride modes, traction control and a quickshifter, sold in three versions above the R15. Yamaha hasn't announced it for the U.S.
