Piaggio Liberty Headlight Recall: Check the Assembly Date Code

Some 2026 Piaggio Liberty scooters may lose their headlight unexpectedly, and the fix depends on a date code. NHTSA campaign 26V396 covers 112 model-year 2026 Liberty 50 and Liberty 150 scooters, filed June 18, 2026.

If your Liberty’s headlight assembly carries a date between January 1 and January 30, 2026, the dealer will replace it free. The record specifies replacement only for assemblies within that date range.

The short version

  • Who is affected: certain 2026 Liberty 50 and Liberty 150 scooters, 112 in total (campaign-wide, not 112 of each).
  • The problem: a fault in an electrical circuit may make the low beam and/or high beam turn off unexpectedly. In some conditions the instrument panel lighting may also fail to light.
  • The risk: loss of lighting reduces visibility and raises crash risk.
  • The fix: dealers inspect the date code on the headlight assembly and replace it if it falls between Jan. 1 and Jan. 30, 2026.
  • Owner letters: Piaggio had not yet provided a notification schedule when NHTSA’s record was checked.

What the record says

NHTSA’s summary says a fault in the electrical circuit may cause the low-beam or high-beam headlight to turn off without warning. In certain conditions the instrument panel lighting may also fail to illuminate. The stated risk is simple: losing light reduces visibility.

A headlight that quits on a scooter is not a minor annoyance. On a dark road you can lose sight of the surface, and other road users can lose sight of you. For a small commuter that often rides in city traffic and at night, that makes the recall worth acting on.

The date-code condition

This recall’s repair is conditional. NHTSA says dealers will inspect the date code label on the headlight assembly. If the date is between January 1, 2026 and January 30, 2026, the headlight will be replaced free. The record does not describe what happens to assemblies with other dates, so there is no stated repair for them under this recall.

That means you can’t assume every Liberty gets a new headlight, and it also means the best check is a dealer visit or a call, since the label is part of the headlight assembly and may not be easy to read on your own.

What to do

  1. Confirm your model. The recall lists 2026 Liberty 50 and 2026 Liberty 150.
  2. Search your VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls or by campaign number 26V396.
  3. Contact Piaggio Group Americas at 212-380-4400 or [email protected] and ask about 26V396.
  4. Book a dealer inspection and ask them to check the headlight date code.

NHTSA’s record says Piaggio has not yet provided a schedule for owner notification. Do not wait for a letter, because the record does not promise a mailing date.

Riding in the meantime

NHTSA does not tell owners to park the scooter. If you ride one before the inspection, a sensible habit is to check that low and high beam both work and that the dash lights up before you leave, especially before a night ride. That is general advice, not a manufacturer instruction, and a working light at startup doesn’t prove the fault isn’t there. If a beam cuts out, pull over safely and call the dealer.

What the record doesn’t tell us

There is no count of crashes, injuries or failures in NHTSA’s page, no estimate of how many of the 112 scooters carry the January date code, and no description of what the electrical fault is beyond “a fault in the electrical circuit.”

Insurance, briefly

A headlight that fails at night is a good reason to ask your insurer how an open recall might matter after an accident. The recall itself says nothing about coverage.

Bottom line

If you ride a 2026 Piaggio Liberty 50 or 150, call a dealer and ask them to check the headlight date code. If it falls between Jan. 1 and Jan. 30, 2026, the replacement is free.
